Retail Lending Transformation
Time frame: 2016-2022
Organisation: Addiko Banking Group
Context: Following its acquisition and restructuring, Addiko Bank faced significant strategic and commercial challenges across its Central and Eastern European retail markets. The bank’s lending portfolio was heavily concentrated in mortgages, limiting growth and profitability, while the overall retail product landscape was very complex and operationally fragmented.
At the same time, the bank was preparing for a public listing on the Vienna Stock Exchange, requiring a clear strategic positioning, a scalable operating model, and strong retail growth.
Action: As Managing Director for Retail Product Management, reporting to the Retail Board Member, I led a comprehensive transformation of the bank’s retail product strategy across six CEE markets.
Result: The program delivered a turnaround of the retail lending business and significantly strengthened the bank’s strategic positioning:
- Unsecured lending disbursements increased by more than 200%, reaching over 500 million EUR annually.
- Operational complexity was substantially reduced through product portfolio simplification and provider consolidation.
- The retail transformation enabled the successful IPO of Addiko Bank in 2019 on the Vienna Stock Exchange.
Key initiatives:
- Creating a centralised retail product management organization to drive the transformation.
- Designing and implementing a new Target Operating Model for Retail Product Management.
- Aligning the retail product architecture with the newly defined Addiko brand positioning
- Managing the product side of rebranding from Hypo to Addiko brand.
- Designing and implementing a new unsecured lending growth strategy.
- Simplifying and harmonising the retail product portfolio across the countries to support the new Brand Identity.
- Consolidating external providers through structured tenders for bank card and insurance providers.
- Creating a centralised retail product management organization to drive the transformation
- Implementing a new Retail Loans Application Processing System to support scalable growth.
The transformation was executed simultaneously across multiple countries, requiring strong coordination between Group headquarters and local market teams.
